My first graders are in need of experience with real birds. One little guy informed me quite emphatically that birds certainly do have hair! Even after a special trip to the school library just for bird books, he wasn't convinced. Many of my students had heard that birds have feathers and taken it on faith that this was true, but not one could tell me that she had actually had contact with a living bird. Now this is a deficit that can be fixed! A window feeder and a transparent window birdhouse will give my doubting Audubon-er and his classmates the view they need to learn about birds first hand. These wonderful one-way mirror inventions put the bird habitat right at the child's eye-level and show the natural behavior of the birds. Birds of a Feather will enrich our study of science and social studies. Children will use their writing skills to record what they have observed. They will read to compare their observations with published information. These materials will be used for many years to come.
