This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work at Edgecombe Circle ES. It is a Title one school and it is in the heart of Baltimore city. They belong to a multi-grade class of 3rd to 5th grade students with disabilities.
Despite their challenges, my students can learn and can do many things including working in the garden.
Most of my students need prompts to complete certain task, however, they are persistent and very cooperative. Most of them enjoyed working in the garden because it is hands on, it's fun, and they enjoy outdoor activities.
My Project
Spring is here and the weather gets warmer. It is time to cultivate our garden again and make them as our outdoor classroom before the school year ends. This is our fourth year maintaining our school's garden project. We strive to improve our garden each year. The garden gives my students the opportunities to apply what they have learned in the classroom such as following directions skills. They can also demonstrate the value of cooperation, teamwork, obedience, and perseverance. As students with communication deficits, we incorporate activities that will motivate them to talk with their friends or classmates.
To fulfill this mission we will need materials to put our goals into a reality.
With your support, we will be able acquire the things that we need such as garden boxes, tools, gloves, and a small greenhouse. We also intend to beautify our garden by using the flower pots and having some annuals. The brush will be utilized to paint the benches that we have in the garden. The garden also benefits other grade levels at our school because they come to visit the garden to learn how plants grow, their parts, and what they need. We also use the garden to talk about healthy eating habits in class. Indeed, this a worthy project that will definitely help my special needs students as well as other kids at my school.
