I feel so lucky to know each and every one of my students. Their lives are not easy; we are a Title I school and over 90% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Most of my students care or are cared for by brothers and sisters because their parents are working hard to provide for them. However, my students amaze me every day with their heart, empathy, follow-through, and hard work.
My school is one of the most diverse in our county, and with that comes the responsibility to provide my students with materials and resources that reflect who they are, and will help them to explore, grow, and have fun.
There is no doubt in my mind that my students are world changers because they are already doing it!
My Project
Different coping techniques work for different students and different tools work in different situations.
We differentiate our learning strategies, effective calming techniques need to be applied in the same way.
I am requesting a number of different resources to help calm anxious, angry, amped up or shut down nervous systems in a variety of situations. I am requesting the following items for the following reasons:
Carpet markers, kickballs, and kickball bases- These items will help get kids moving! When amped up one of the best things we can do is get kids moving in a safe and fun way.
Books about feelings, friendship, and body safety- Many students struggle to understand their own feelings and what boundaries are ok and not ok or how to express them. These books will help students to grasp these important topics.
Fidgets (sensory rings, magnetic pens, pop key chains, etc)- Fidgets work well to help students focus and burn off excess nervous energy.
Snacks- Being hungry makes everything harder! Most of our teachers provide extra snacks in their classrooms out of their own pockets, any bit helps!
Sound machine, noise cancelling headphones and ear plugs- Stress, trauma, and neurodivergence can increase sound sensitivity so any tools that help to offset this stressor is always a huge relief to our students.
