Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a seventh grade English Language Arts teacher, as well as a sixth and seventh grade Journalism teacher at a middle school in the South Bronx, I've been trying to ensure that my students get the exposure to current events that they need to be informed citizens. Because televisions with VCR's and DVD players are at a premium in my school, where 88 percent of the students receive free lunch, I've had difficulty getting the materials when I need to teach a Journalism lesson using a news clip or a film. Now, as I'm planning a unit on violence in the media for my 40 Journalism students (including a class of 15 "problem" sixth graders), I realize that having access to a television/VCR/DVD player will be key for allowing them to see the effects of violence. I plan on showing news programs about the Columbine shootings as well as using New York City evening news to discuss what is shown in the media and how events are portrayed on T.V. compared to newspapers. I want my students, who go to one of the 12 most violent schools in New York City, to create their own video or news article about violence at the end of the unit. I want them to be excited about creating something like they see on T.V. To generate that excitement, they need to see what good programming looks like. A television/VCR/DVD player will not only help these 40 students understand the concepts of this unit, but will be used to talk about other current events using the news and documentaries throughout the school year. Help inspire them to look beyond the world in their neighborhood and see how events elsewhere affect their lives.
