This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am a 2nd grade teacher in the East New York section of Brooklyn. All of my students receive free school lunch.
I would like to provide my students with a classroom library dedicated to caring for the Earth. I would like this library for several reasons. One reason is so that the children can have some new non-fiction reading material available to them during classroom reading time. It has become apparent during class discussions and lessons over the past several months that my students are extremely interested in learning about the Earth, animals, and what they can do to help.
Also, I initiated a "Clean-Up and Beautification Committee" at my school last year, during which time clean-ups took place, and a perennial garden was planted by students and teachers. I would like to continue with this initiative this year, and it would be helpful to have more literature available to the children in this area. With this library we could read about things we could do to help the Earth, and then we could get out there and do it!
The school grounds and the area surrounding the school are not particularly "green" areas, and last year's students took great pleasure in making a beautiful contribution to both the school and the community.
I know that my students would greatly enjoy and benefit from a classroom library dedicated to cleaning-up and caring for the Earth. The future of our Earth is in the hands of our children. Let's teach them all of the great things that they can do!
