A Traditional Welcome for New Students

My Students

The students who take German in high school are motivated to not only learn the language but also to become familiar with and experience German culture. These students are invested in obtaining as much knowledge as possible about Germany and the German people. The students appreciate the creative and interesting approach to learning which results in a very high retention rate.

My students are true German enthusiasts enjoying all aspects of the German language and culture.

They learn and practice together and always support each other. These students are continuously driven to learn as much as they can about Germany. Being able to complete special projects in the classroom will enable them to learn in fun and different ways, which feeds their enthusiasm.

My Project

In Germany, new students traditionally receive welcome baskets called Schultüte. When the students set off for their first day of school upon entering first grade, their parents and/or grandparents present them with a large cardboard cone, attractively decorated and filled with toys, chocolate, candies/sweets, school supplies, and various other special treats. The cone is given to children to make this anxiously awaited first day of school a little sweeter. In my classes, the advanced students make these gifts for the new students who will start learning.

We celebrate this German tradition as a way to make our new students excited for the school year.

We do this by having our German students make these gifts (containing various school supplies) in the spring for the new students who begin level one German classes in the fall. The new students greatly appreciate this gesture as well as the useful items included in the cones. It sets the stage for a fun year learning the German language and culture.
