Help me give my students access to the multicultural collection of picture books featured in the 2019 March Book Madness online tournament, such as The Day You Begin and Dreamers.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is a K-5 elementary school, nestled in a quiet neighborhood of a busy college town. We have a diverse student population, inclusive of students who are learning to speak English as their second language, and students with special learning needs.
Our school library program is an integral part of the instructional team, supporting all of our students in 21st-century skills, research, digital literacy and a love of reading.
Each classroom visits the library at least once a week for an hour. This hour is filled with a variety of learning experiences to support students with their growing literacy and technology skills.
My Project
It is my goal to immerse my students in as many literacy-rich experiences as I can while they're in the library. This year, I would love for my students to participate in the online book tournament March Book Madness. March Book Madness, created by two elementary public school teachers, is an online bracket style book tournament. The motto of the book tournament is "Books Always Win!" This years book theme is "The Character's Journey."
During the book tournament, students will listen to each book and engage in discussions with their classmates centering around the character's journey within each story.
Students will then participate in the online portion of the tournament, which includes voting for the book in each bracket that they feel most connected to.
Participating in this book tournament will give my students the opportunity to listen to rich, multicultural literature. It will also allow my students to think deeper about each text, supporting their growing literacy skills. Adding these multicultural books to our school library collection once the book tournament has ended will benefit our students for years to come.
