My students are an amazing group of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders who are full of energy and thirst for knowledge. They come from a variety of homes and lifestyles; from one bedroom rental property to family farms. Many students in our small, rural community come to school to feel safe and loved.
Many of my students lack access to technology in the home which motivates me to provide these tools and opportunities for my students even more!
Over half of our students qualify for free or reduced-price meals. As a teacher in a low income school, it is hard to obtain the resources needed for my students to become successful learners.
My Project
iPads and cases will be used to help my students with dyslexic tendencies. They will be able to access apps that reinforce skills.
"When a flower doesn't bloom you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower" - Alexander Den Heijer.
I use the Barton Reading and Spelling System with my students who have dyslexic tendencies. Currently, we use wooden tiles to build words. The tiles get mixed up and we spend a lot of time just looking for the letters we need. There is a Barton Reading and Spelling app available on iPads, that would build the words for us and track the students' progress so we can focus more of our time learning instead of searching for letters.
