Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I teach seventh and eighth grade math and science at Community Junior High School 145 in the Bronx. The student population is 1,622. 47% of the students are female and 53% are male. 60% of the students are Hispanic and 36% are Black. 90% of the students are eligible for free lunch. A significant number of students at MS 145 are non-readers. Over sixty percent of the eighth grade population performs below grade level in reading. In order to address this situation, MS 145 has implemented thirty minutes of reading during the morning homeroom period and fifteen minutes of reading during the afternoon homeroom period. We would sincerely appreciate a boom box and some jazz CDs in order to create an environment that is conducive to reading. Music such as jazz settles the students down and establishes a calm and serene environment that allows the students to concentrate on their book. This type of environment can transform non-readers into readers which can eventually improve their reading level.
