Help me give my students a way to carry and store their independent reading books. We want to provide our students with a sturdy yet sustainable way to keep their books organized and safe.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students have diverse learning styles and different unique interests. Our students read on different levels and are able to access and bring home reading materials based on their level every night. Although our students come from a low-income area in the South Bronx, they come to school eager to learn and we want to motivate them to be actively engaged in their learning by asking questions, researching information, and finding their own answers and opinions. Our classroom is an inclusive classroom, meaning we have some students with disabilities. Each school year we teach our students to be understanding of our differences and unique abilities. They collaborate in groups and learn to work together.
We want to encourage our students to find their voice as readers, writers, mathematicians, and leaders so that they can go back to their families and their community and make a positive difference.
They are eager to learn and we don't want to lose the spark that they have when they walk through our classroom door.
My Project
Our students deserve to carry their books home with pride! We assign our students nightly reading homework. We do this not only so that they can practice using the reading skills that they have learned during the school day, but so that they can also have time to read books of their own selecting independently. Students are able to select books from our classroom library (which we frequently update by ordering books from Scholastic that they are interested in) based on their independent reading level and their interest(s).
Reading totes are a more eco-friendly way for students to feel proud about the books they are taking home and to help them to take special care of them.
At the end of the school year, students can keep their reading totes and use them again and again as they visit places like the New York Public Library or a local bookstore. In the past, we have used gallon plastic Ziploc bags, which although they are fairly sturdy they aren't the most attractive thing to look at. Over time they eventually do tend to rip or tear. Some students go through 2-3 plastic bags during a school year. Using plastic bags is also not good for the environment. In fact, our students have a unit of study where they learn about the environmental impact of using plastic bags.
We want students to be proud about the books they are taking home. We want them to have a safe place to keep them. Sometimes we hear stories of our classroom books getting lost or a sibling spilling food or a drink on the pages of the book. We don't want our students to have to worry about things that may be out of their control! We want them to focus on reading!
