As a school psychologist in a low-income school district, my students are faced with various obstacles both in and out of the classroom. Our school, though wealthy in amazing teachers and wonderful children, lacks the financial ability to provide much needed classroom support. Though many of these children come to school with hungry bellies, disheveled clothing and numerous other struggles you would never know by the smiles on their faces and the love in their hearts. Many of our students have limited access to resources, and have a history of trauma. I work with all students within our school who may need social emotional support, strategies for coping skills, and problem solving skills.
Unfortunately, because the majority of my students have experienced trauma in their lives, this impacts their ability to learn and make progress without extra supports being put in place.
The rewards we experience as teachers are many but there are just as many struggles. All students are capable of learning, but not all students are learn in the same way.
My Project
With the items requested, I am proposing to put together a toolkit of resources that can be used when we identify a student who is struggling in the classroom. This toolkit will include things like fidgets, wiggle seats, pencil grips, and sensory tools. This way, we have resources and ideas at our fingertips, and we will be able to support the students immediately, rather than waiting too long to address their concerns. I work with the most incredible hard-working and selfless teachers, who spend a significant of money out of pocket to meet their students academic needs. I would love to be able to decrease the amount of financial responsibility and stress that teachers have trying to solve their student difficulties alone by providing them with viable intervention resources.
My building has a student support team that works to meet each students individual needs by determining what it is they need to be successful.
The team would use the materials in this toolkit on a trial basis and then the items would come back to the team to help other struggling students!
