A Tisket a Tasket Lets Make a Ceramic Basket

My project needs underglazes, several types of basketry reed, paint brushes for painting the coil pots with the glazes, and majolica glazes to add details to their coil pots, as well as clear gloss underglaze to seal the coil pot/baskets and make them waterproof.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Shelley's classroom raised $559

This project is fully funded

I am a high school art teacher with approximately 1100 students. I teach Art 1-4, Art appreciation, Advanced placement, and Pottery 1-3. The obstacle that my classroom is facing is the fact that I don't have experience in crafts such as basketry so the opportunity to have someone come in and work with the students is awesome. I feel this will be a great benefit to the students as well as to me. The students will be exposed to a fine artist working in the field of ceramic basketry

My students are going to have the opportunity to have a visiting artist with the help of various community groups but we do not have the money for the various supplies the students need. Basketry in the form of seagrass baskets has been indigenous to this region and many students have expressed the desire to learn how to weave their own. With the purchase of the underglazes, reed, brushes and extruder my students would be able to make the coil/woven baskets that the visiting artist makes.

My pottery classes have a high percentage of students that have problems with motor skills. I believe that the extruder would help those students succeed in creating interesting pieces by making the clay coils for these students and allowing them the opportunity to just work on the pots. A variety of glazes, and brushes will help all students be able to decorate the pieces in a way that utilizes a variety of patterns and motifs that are representative of our region.

Your help will ensure that all my students will have the opportunity to succeed and be exposed to both pottery and basketry. It will give the students the opportunity to share their own work at a show in the local library and work with a working artist.
