it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Prior to this pandemic, my students loved to read and interact with each other. In the beginning of the year, my students did a time capsule activity to predict the year. In there they placed their goals, aspirations and wants for this year. Typically, we would open these "Time Capsules" on the last day of class and reminisce / see predict accurately and reflect on their progress of goals. Of course, no one could predict that our year would end with distance learning. In essence, many of the students are confined to their homes or the homes of loved ones due to family members being on the Frontline or underlying medical conditions. Furthermore, they have limited resources. They are in need of motivation and hope of some normalcy.
My Project
From the first week, our classroom was decorated with an abundance of motivational quotes and messages. Due to the pandemic, my students are left with distance learning and well, missing each other and the good times we had. I have had to be creative with motivational ideas such as my "Shout Out" virtual bulletin board where I post their names when they have completed an assignment.
The idea resonated in me, what if I could send a personal message, their own time capsule letter they wrote to themselves, a "New Year, New Goal" activity they did, and a laminated bookmark to encourage them during these difficult times?
Bam! And this is how the idea began.
One of their distance learning assignments currently is to document their new life with social distancing, distance learning and masks when going out. At the culmination of the project they will place items from the beginning of the school year to now into a Time Capsule to be opened in 10 years. I can send them instructions on colored paper as well a address label with the day to open it. This project will allow me to bridge the gap between our classroom we left behind so abruptly and their new experience with distance learning. A Time Capsule Keepsake indeed!
