This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We live in an era where our kids are driven by immediate feedback on there phones, computers, TVs, laptops etc. So what makes you think they don't need that same stimulation in school as well? My students need more access to technology not only for research but for literature as well.

A majority of my students come from low-income families and do not have access to technology at home.

Even though they are attending a beautiful looking art school, they are not provided with much technology because we are very low on funds. Within in the last 3 years we have lost access to 2 computer rooms and now share the carts of laptops with the whole school, which means we are lucky if we get several days every 4 or 5 months to use those laptops. The computers in the library are now only available part of the day because the librarian has been asked to teach several courses and run the leadership program. My students are in need of technology to do research for their persuasive and expository essays or to complete get information about a college they would like to attend and create a brochure on. There are endless projects that we need technology for but don’t have access to.

My Project

I would like to incorporate the use of e-readers/Internet tablets into our class weekly. We will use the tablets to research online sources and use these sources to support their claims in their essays or to compose their news articles. The tablets will also be useful for accessing classic and contemporary literature. The benefits of using such technology is we will not need as much ink and paper (which the whole school has been limited to 2 reams a month), and will have access to many open source materials. Also my students will be more technologically savvy which will prepare them for their college years.

Giving my students the opportunity to use technology such as a tablet/e-reader will have a huge impact on them because these gadgets are the way of the future.

Colleges will eventually go paperless and probably require all students to own a tablet which will provide them with literature but also allow them to annotate and take notes. They will be at a great advantage if they get to practice with this form of technology now!
