A Therapeutic Sensory Garden for Students With Autism

Help me give my students an outdoor sensory garden, as a safe and therapeutic space for outdoor instruction, particularly for our neurodivergent students, who may find it challenging to reach inside the classroom to maximize their learning environment.

My Project

This project aims to design an outdoor learning environment, a sensory garden, that enhances sensory integration for preschool and up to 5th-grade children with special needs. Autistic and other neuro-diverse children often have hypersensitivity or hyposensitivity in many senses. This sensory garden will provide a therapeutic and educational outdoor learning setting for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other neurodivergent disorders. This learning environment offers different learning levels than a regular indoor classroom.

We need outdoor gardening supplies for our kids' targeted learning activities, including:

16 bags of soil, different plants, a raised garden planter box, landscape fabric, a water hose, and a garden timer to follow directions, enhance their fine motor skills, and learn how plants grow and adapt. This amount of soil, seeds, and gardening materials allows over 60 kids to learn individually and maximize their experience. Avoid water waste and keep plants alive during holiday school closures with the water timer. The storage box, multi-purpose chair set, and wooden picnic tables with umbrellas keep items safe so kids may learn organization and classification. To accommodate the many garden students, sitting is requested. Children can play year-round under the canopy without overheating and harming themselves. Learn to reduce anxiety and stress and enhance self-regulation with the indoor/outdoor picnic sand and water table, bubble machine, bubble solution refills, cascading water fountain, and chimes. Water activities provide diverse sensory experiences for autistic youngsters with sensory processing issues. The chimes' soothing tones help students control their emotions and educate them on how wind, weather, and vibrations affect music. The students who are taking part have very different levels of skill, and the sensory garden is a great way to help differentiate for a lot of students.
