Our students enjoy physical activity and their bodies and minds benefit equally. However, our students are not always able to access resources in every environment so our goal is to be able to do so! "Most people see what is, and never see what can be." -Einstein
My students are four elementary-aged boys, each with their own interests, strengths, and talents!
They attend a large elementary school and spend the majority of their day in a self-contained classroom. They join their peers in music, P.E., and school-wide functions.
They work daily towards academic and functional goals, following a daily routine that encourages them to be as independent as possible. They enjoy going outside, riding adapted bikes, playing on the playground, music, socialization with peers, and visually stimulating toys. They are non-verbal but have their owns means of communication, that they work on increasing daily through the use of sign language, picture icons, and object schedules.
Each student receives appropriate forms of therapy (physical, speech, occupational, and so on) on a weekly basis in order to increase their motor and communication skills as well! They are very vibrant and loving students who truly enjoy coming to school each day!
My Project
With the provided funds, the students will be able to obtain transportation to a local county park's climbing wall. The students will participate by climbing the wall. With adequate equipment and support, they will each, individually, travel up the climbing wall and experience what it is like!
They will be able to enjoy a physical activity that is typically not accessible for our students.
In addition, it will provide our students an opportunity to gain strength, increase motor control and function, and range of motion!
None of my students have ever been able to go to a climbing wall nor have they visited the local county park.
I believe it will be an unforgettable experience for both the students and their parents. I believe that our students deserve equal chances to participate in activities such as their peers. I believe that we could begin this trip on a yearly basis so that the students can make visible progress each trip and have something to look forward to!
