My Students

January 18 is A.A. Milne's birthday. On that day, I'd like to invite my first grade students to a Teddy Bears' Picnic. To prepare ourselves for the big day, we'd like to read books about teddy bears. Would you help us buy some?

Having a Teddy Bears' Picnic in the middle of January sounds crazy - but it is not.

Our school is located in South Florida! It is a K-8 Center, and I am the school librarian. Part of my job is to get the children enthused about reading. Particularly the little ones! I was just wondering about special events that we could hold this upcoming school year. Events that would really excite the munchkins about reading. I noticed that January 18 is the birthday of A.A. Milne, creator of Winnie the Pooh. Years ago, a first grade teacher held a Teddy Bears' Picnic for her class. The children who attended that picnic are now in high school, but I've never forgotten it. Each child took his or her teddy bear from home, so they could join in the fun, too. The children and bears sat in a ring, listened to stories, ate and played games. I'd love to recreate that experience for our current crop of first graders.

My Project

I'm talking about approximately 100 children. So, in fact, we'll hold 4 or 5 picnics instead of 1. In the weeks ahead of A.A. Milne's birthday, during their weekly Story Time in the library, I'd like to read the first graders story books about bears, and then let the children check some of those books out. I've found 7 titles that I think the kids will really like: books about Paddington Bear; Goldisocks and the Three Libearians (you read it right); polar bears, mischievous bears, well-dressed bears, colorful bears...and, of course, Winnie the Pooh. There are 17 books in this project because we'd like 2 or 3 copies of each title, so kids can borrow the stories that they hear in Story Time.

At the end of this project, I hope that 100 children will have an unforgettable, fun experience with reading.

The books will remain in the school library, so that we can have a Teddy Bears' Picnic every year!
