I teach middle school FACS (Family and Consumer Science). The demographics of my students cause me many sleepless nights. Many are on their own in the evening without an adult to cook them dinner. The majority don't eat breakfast, either. Their idea of a good meal usually comes from a drive-thru, fast food restaurant. My dream would be to help my students become independent in their own kitchens and be able to fix healthy home-cooked meals for themselves, their siblings, and possibly their busy parents.
I'm not a professional chef, but my students count on me to teach them the basics and fundamentals of cooking. After 16 years teaching language arts, this teacher only knows what I learned as a kid with my mother and whatever I Google on YouTube. The Pro Series Culinary Cooking classes I would like to take will teach me all the basics and more. Skills my students can pass on to their families, or even their future. The classes focus on knife skills, cooking methods for all cuts of meat, cooking healthy vegetables, and how to use sauces to make anything taste wonderful. In addition to my learning, I will be exciting middle school students to join a career that doesn't involve a 4 year college, or thousands of dollars in student loan debit.
