Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are all English learners who possess great resilience and a desire to learn. These qualities are what allow them to face challenges in their new environments and succeed in and out of the classroom.

Our school and the DonorsChoose community help my students build and maintain a healthy and secure sense of self.

Where before students struggled to identify themselves as readers, they now have come to understand (with the help of resources like graphic novels) that not only can they read, but it can be fun, too!

Ever since I joined the DonorsChoose community, students I haven't personally taught have learned that I have “good books” and so my consideration of who “my” students are has expanded. While I love being a book-pusher and having the books students want to read, equally important to me is having the resources that will support and guide them on their educational journeys.

My Project

My newest group of students, ranging from 3rd-5th grade, is a new arrival bunch recently relocated from Afghanistan. They are the the epitome of ideal students because they are eager, energetic and enthused learners. They allow me to fully feel the phase that I am “a teacher that teaches students who study” because there are intrinsically motivated to learn and succeed.

In the week we have been together, I have already witnessed them take academic risk, actively participate in class activities, help each other and celebrate both individual and group success.

The materials desired within this project will allow to me to support fellow teachers on Teachers Pay Teachers in purchasing their materials specifically designed for new arrivals. The Teachers Pay Teachers gift card will allow me to seek, purchase, print and use materials specifically for my newly arrived students. I will be able to laminate materials and have students use dry erase markers to engage in different ways with new material. Additionally, I can print homework pages to allow them to continue practicing at home. The double sided tape will allow me to post helpful anchor charts, vocabulary, labels and more on our cinder block walls that are tough to keep materials posted on. Please help me have the materials I am requesting to support my students.
