“If people cannot write well, they cannot think well, and if they cannot think well, others will do their thinking for them.” This quote from George Orwell hangs on my classroom wall and expresses the importance of critical thinking. More than anything, I want my students to leave my classroom as critical thinkers. Critical thinking not only comes from informational text, but from great literary pieces as well.
It is my goal to purchase current novels both fiction and non-fiction alike to engage my students in the love of reading and thinking critically about what they read.
My Project
Through participation in book groups reading today's latest and greatest in fiction, my students will be able to read for enjoyment while also discussing literature with their peers in a constructive and engaging atmosphere.
Communication and collaboration are so essential for today's generation and its dependence on technology.
Students need to be able to talk with each other face to face about what they are learning and reading. For example, through discussing Every Last Word, my students will talk about the main character's struggles with OCD and anxiety as they relate to their own lives as more and more teens face similiar struggles. Today's literature addresses topics that will engage my students and encourage the process of critical thinking. My biggest goal is to create critical thinkers who leave my classroom with the ability to discuss what they are learning and digesting as citizens of the world.
