A Tangible Novel Study of Charlie & the Chocolate Factory

My Project

My third grade students are currently finding their love for reading! To further the goal of creating life long readers I'd love to have your partnership to bring Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to life. We will experience what it feels like to stand at Willy Wonka's factory gate with the large photo drop. We will taste real cocoa beans and research how chocolate is made using technology. Using the chocolate fountain and chocolate chips to make our own treats, we will better understand the purpose of Willy Wonka's chocolate river. This will help us analyze why Augustus was so tempted to jump in the chocolate river. We will sample Wonka's gobstoppers as we write a response to the chapter describing them.

We will investigate character traits and how they impact the community around us by taking on the role of each character through tangible learning.

We will chew the gum all day like Violet. This will inspire us to create our own version of the three course meal made out of bubblegum. We will wear the sunglasses as we take on the role of Mike in the TV room. The large squirrel balloons will help us understand how Veruca felt when she was surrounded by one hundred squirrels. The actions and behaviors of each character will be reenacted by the students to help deepen their understanding of how these characters effect each other and the story. Each student will also receive their own copy of the book in order to provide text evidence to questions and writing prompts throughout the unit. This will be a learning experience that my students will enjoy and it will offer an engaging way to introduce them to reading chapter books for entertainment. Thanks for supporting my young readers!
