This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach a lovely group of students. We are located in the heart of the west side of Chicago. They are a mixture of three and four year-old students. My students have seen and been exposed to some troubling things. However they are a resilient, caring, fun-loving group and they are eager to learn. I teach in a predominantly low income school. One hundred-percent of my students qualify for free lunch. My class is comprised of students who are African American and Hispanic. There are also students in my room who are new to the US and the English language.
My Project
Small groups are a very important part of our day. Since my students have varying levels of needs. It is imperative that I meet with like functioning students to help them in the areas where they need more focused instruction. My classroom is currently comprised of large tables that make it difficult to reach students and meet with them in a way that respects their privacy. I have to speak loudly to them and have other students answering my questions or I have to move around the large table, distracting other students. Our class would use the jelly-bean shaped table to meet daily.
