My Project

No matter the subject or content, we as educators are ultimately charged with creating a positive environment to cultivate good manners, appropriate choices and self-responsibility. The music classroom warrants active participation with instruments in hand, method books & sheet music, and of course a pencil.

A successful musician is a prepared musician.

The engaged learner is more apt to develop his/her understanding of music literacy, refine technical accuracy and elevate their creativity through the musical art form. Musicians must take responsibility for their pursuits.

Our school district offers beginning band instruction to nearly 120 fifth grade students across four elementary sites annually. In addition to teaching the fundamentals & techniques of playing band instruments, we strive to promote student responsibility and taking ownership of learning paths. Outlined in the Beginning Band Pledge, students are to be responsible for their instrument and band "stuff" two days a week.

Periodic "Responsibility Days" are held throughout the school year to promote active participation. Over 7,200 stickers are awarded as incentive annually. At the end of the school year, the 'great sticker count' ensues with the winner at each school receiving a sizable prize; i.e.: portable music stand, giant candy bar. For a fifth grader, the competition is fierce!

Please help me promote responsibility within my 120 young musicians. Thank you for helping them march on!
