Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 9th and 10th grade English students are unique individuals that come from diverse backgrounds. As a low-income, high poverty urban school, my students arrive at our school from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. We have students who have come from approximately 30 different countries and speak at least 23 separate languages. They bring with them their own personalities, histories, and interests that help make our classroom community an energetic place. While my students face multitudes of hardships, their resiliency is inspiring and motivates me to work hard for them. Whether it is through more materials, unique learning experiences, or simple supports, my goal is to do whatever I can to support them.

What makes these students so amazing is their positive attitudes, motivation to improve, and the ability to use their differences as ways to teach each other.

Every year we work together towards group and individual goals to develop ourselves as better readers, writers, students, and humans. On paper, my job as their teacher is to provide them with the literacy skills they need to be successful in our world, but I find that through our journey together, it grows into so much more.

My Project

As the year progresses we are continuing our learning and growing in so many different ways! My students are challenging themselves day in and day out with different activities and stations, and it has been a dream to see them becoming stronger individuals, both academically and personally. However, as we continue to grow, we are finding ourselves seeking more supplies.

Basic supplies and small motivators will help my students succeed in class!

In order to have successful stations in class, we need materials such as pencils, erasers, highlighters, post it notes, and tape. These will help my students interact with their independent reading books, take careful notes, and engage in smaller lessons. Additionally, I am building a new reward system in my class to keep students motivated through the end of the year! My students LOVE stickers and they love decorating their belongings with different vinyl stickers. When students have strong performances in class, show growth, or are simply caught being kind, a sticker will be an option as a reward! I hope that this will have a huge impact on our classroom culture.
