My Students

Although I have yet to meet my students, I know that this year is going to be a big year trying to return to some sense of normalcy. Throughout the pandemic our keiki survived new and trying times, yet still showed up and learned, grew, and persisted. Finally, we will be back to our classroom ready to continue our pursuit of knowledge and back together as one.

One of my favorite things about this age is their curiosity and passion for change because they are the fixers, the innovators, the creators, the questioners, the problem-solvers, and our future generation.

They see the change they want to make in the world and find ways to achieve it from helping to protect and clean up our reefs to sharing smiles when in need. 5th graders give me hope and I am always proud to be their teacher. They constantly teach me new lessons and I know this year will be one for the books!

My Project

Countless studies can be found on the positive impacts of Flexible Seating in the classroom and it is time to move from the more traditional approach to what is best for our kids, their brains, and their bodies. Think about settling down to read your favorite book or watch a movie. I highly doubt that you would be comfortable sitting in a standard classroom desk and/or chair for that period of time, yet our students sit in these spots for a grand majority of their 6 hour day. Not only are they uncomfortable, but there are so many other opportunities all around that can and should be available to our keiki.

Take a stroll on Google and you can find numerous articles from colleges, educational websites, and blogs alike that highlight the benefits of Flexible Seating.

Not only is it comfortable, but it gives students a choice and a voice in the classroom as well as a sense of control. If we want student centered classrooms their voices need to be heard and they should be the ones making choices, not just the teacher. Furthermore, Flexible Seating helps to engage students and find how they best learn which in turn makes them active participants in their learning. I would really like to create a setting where my students can thrive, especially one that is backed by research.
