This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is aboard the Belle Chasse Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base. We serve the children of our Men and Women serving in the United States Military from all branches. Our school has over 1000 children that come from diverse military families. Children move every few years and have to start a new school because of the military parents' duty station transfer.
At BC Academy, teachers and staff members strive to provide the best possible education to the military children that have to endure a new home, new school and new friends every few years.
The mission of BC Academy is to educate our military-dependent children, no matter what their background or previous school experience, to fully achieve their personal and academic potential through the acquisition of core knowledge and the skills of analysis, problem-solving, communication, and global responsibility.
My Project
My students need a listening station and read-along books in which they can listen and see written words in order for them to begin their journey to becoming avid readers at a young age.
Right now, our listening center has old, school hand held CD players that have broken buttons and earphones.
All our CDs skip because they are so worn out and scratched that the children are unable to use the listening center at all.
If we were able to have a new listening center and new CD books for our classroom, our kids would begin to enjoy the listening center once again and start their journey to learning to read and love reading. When children learn the joy and love for reading at a young age, they have a greater chance of becoming strong readers.
