A Stitch in Time

My students need sewing machines to ignite their creative spirits and explore a healthy, productive hobby or career interest!

My classroom is a place for children to learn through hands-on, real life activities. I teach a variety of classes, ranging from Foods and Nutrition to Parenting to Individual Relationships to grades 6-12. My public school is located in a very rural, low income area, therefore funding is difficult to come by.

I am currently teaching a small textiles unit to all 8th grade students. Many have shown a genuine interest in sewing, however we don't offer the course at the high school level. One of the primary reasons being that I have inadequate machines available for student use. I currently have about 12 machines, only 3 of which are less than 20 years old. The older machines are continually breaking down, needing to be repaired or simply don't work at all. I would really like to be able to have working machines not only for my middle school students, but I'd also like to offer a sewing/textiles course at the high school level. Many of my middle school students have asked, "why can't we take a sewing class in high school?" I'd like to give them the opportunity.

Your help will make it possible for my students to not only have working machines at the 8th grade level, but also explore career opportunities by taking more advanced courses in high school. I believe that the art of sewing is quickly disappearing, but I passionately believe that it is an important skill to learn. More than ever, individuals and families need to be able to work within their means, using their resources to save money and time.

The ability to sew basic patterns and mend clothes is something that I believe all students should have. In addition, our students need healthy, constructive hobbies that they enjoy. Finally, the creative outlet of fashion construction and design is a career path that our students have not been able to tap into at this point. It is unfortunate that I haven't been able to expose students to more of these types of career opportunities because we have a very good, reputable college in our area that focuses on design and fashion careers. I'd like to open doors to students who would be interested in those careers and let them explore their opportunities.
