My Project

I am currently a third-grade social studies and science teacher at our elementary school in Washington, D.C. Our scholars are some of the brightest in the city! In science, we like to make science fun by participating in hands-on learning labs to understand real-life concepts!

Help STEMulate our scholars' green thumbs by supporting their garden!

Since the pandemic, home gardens (popularly known as Victory Gardens during war times) have exploded! Let's take it back to the basics by teaching kids how to grow their own food sustainably! We plan to use the Square Foot Gardening method, which truly encompasses all elements of STEM; we will use science (a plant's life cycle and how environmental factors affect a plant's growth), technology (using the internet to research the best possible plants for zone 7a), engineering (to determine the best type of garden bed), and mathematics (depending on the plant, how many seeds per plot arranged in arrays) as we navigate our gardens. We will use all of the materials in this project to develop and maintain a vegetable and fruit garden, with each student having their own square foot plot to grow a plant of their choice. Scholars will also reap what they sow- they get to harvest and enjoy their plants once they reach maturity! What a delicious victory!
