Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I couldn't imagine working with a better group of kids; with big behavior comes big personality. My students range from 13-18 years-old, and have multiple disabilities. Each are moderately to severely affected by their disabilities, but that will not stop them from expressing who they are. They have specific interests, motivations, and aspirations, just like any other person. My job is to help them along their path to explore options and find what gives them that 'spark'.
My students deserve to discover all the world has to offer, and I can think of a few avenues to explore.
I am lucky to have expressive students and families to give me ideas on how to go about teaching and building on their interests!
My Project
Music can be used in so many ways, both in and outside of the classroom. For my students, music can be used to teach communication skills, to memorize cadences in reading, coping skills, math skills, and so much more. Learning to play an instrument has also been shown to increase stable connections in the brain, and improve students' learning. Music Therapy is also a widely used service in special education classrooms, but the gap between sessions could decrease the effectiveness of that therapy.
Funding this project will allow me to enhance learning by using music and rhythm to teach various skills, and improve the quality of life for my students.
In addition to this, music is accessible for all students, no matter their abilities. Some may not be able to see, hear, or grasp some of the instruments - but the rhythm can be felt by all. And having this wide variety of instruments and sounds will help me to reach each student in my classroom, regardless of their background.
