I am the science lab coordinator and teacher for a science and math magnet middle school in rural North Carolina. Each student in sixth-eighth grade comes to the science lab once a week. Our town is the home of the largest Marine base in the country. I would like to teach our seventh and eighth grade students physics concepts by using a yo-yo! Students will explore pendulum usage by varying the length of the yo-yo swing. Students will chart and gather data. Exploring gyroscopes will be accomplished by spinning the yo-yo at an angle. Potential and kinetic energy will be defined by using the yo-yo to physically understand the concepts. Finally, the greatest learning by inquiry will occur when students have to develop their own lab to devise the longest spinning yo-yo. We will call this the Spin War. Approximately 400 students this year and 200 in subsequent years will benefit from this project! What a great way to challenge and excite students in the area of physics!
