Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are predominantly Latino. They are bright, inquisitive, full of life, and unfortunately, underrepresented in the sciences. I want to show them that science is accessible to everyone and for everyone.
When an opportunity comes to have them experience science first-hand, I want to seize it.
April 8 is the last solar eclipse visible in New York until 2044. By a quirk of galactic coincidence, the peak eclipse will occur around 3:00 and conclude at 3:29, 1 minute before our daily dismissal. That afternoon we will pause regular classes and bring everyone out to observe and celebrate this astronomical wonder.
We will have over 400 people viewing the eclipse and want to have as many telescopes available as possible for the viewing. This spotting scope will serve that purpose on the day of the eclipse. Afterward, there is no way I will let it gather dust. It will be a perfect companion for our trips to see birds during our ecology projects.
Please make this once-in-a-generation eclipse even more special and help us get a new scope!
