I teach a wide variety of students - low income to high income, several ethnicities, and some speak two languages. I love the diversity in my classroom! I think the kids can see how they are all different and still work together as a team. This year I'm teaching 1st grade in a large elementary school. Our school gets kids from all over due to several large refineries in the area. Some are from out of state and others from other countries.
My Project
Currently my classroom doeant have a large rug for everyone to sit on during large group time. We have to stay in our desks because the floor is tile. I love the idea of carpet squares for several reasons. Each student has their own defined space. We can move into any space we have. Students can grab their square and go read in a quiet spot. We can gather in a large group and everyone is comfortable. My favorite thing to do is to gather my kids around me in my rocking chair and share a special book with them. It's just not the same with them all in their desks. This group time is also great for class discussions, sharing our feelings, and growing as a class.
