A Spirit of Hope After Hurricane Harvey

My students need the proper cheer accessories (pom poms) to proudly support and cheer school spirit back into our school and community after Harvey destruction.

My Students

I teach P.E. at an elementary school in Port Arthur, Texas. I am also the Assistant Cheer Coach. Recently our school, along with many of my student’s homes were flooded due to Harvey. Our superintendent of schools immediately handed our school building over to the district inspectors and contractor. We were informed by our school principal and superintendent that our building is now contaminated and that we will not be returning to our building until next school year 2018-2019. As a teacher in a Title I school and low-income school district, my students are faced with various challenges both in and out of the classroom. Their grandparents are raising many of my students and living in a single parent household. They receive free breakfast/lunch based on their socioeconomic status.

This school year, will be the first time ever that our school will have a cheer squad.

Before Harvey, the cheer coaches had arranged for Adams Titanettes to participate in various community activities and school functions. We are incredibly excited to represent LAES to the best of our ability. However, the costs of cheer uniforms and cheer accessories have placed us in need of support from our community.

My Project

By donating cheer accessories like pom poms would not only help alleviate the cost, but it will improve the girl’s self-esteem, self-confidence, pride, and it will give them the happiness and courage they once had. It will also help improve and increase student attention and focus, and their academic achievement in school. Our goal for cheer squad is to help build our school spirit and a sense of community at school and in our district and look like cheerleaders doing it. After a devastating storm that left some of our students homeless, being a part of Adams Titanettes provides them with a sense of normalcy. Also, for them a Titanette is more than just a group of girls cheering and developing a friendship; it is a family.
