Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

What I love most about my students with autism is that each one brings a unique way of experiencing, communicating, and interacting with the world. They are curious, determined, joyful, and capable learners, but they do not all learn in the same way. Some communicate with words, while others rely on pictures, gestures, AAC, or other forms of communication. Some need movement or deep pressure to help regulate their bodies, while others need a quiet space to reduce sensory input. My goal is to create a classroom where every student has the support needed to feel safe, communicate, participate, and learn.

The resources in this project are essential tools that will help remove barriers to learning by supporting communication, sensory regulation, independence, and successful participation throughout the school day.

Communication boards and picture cards will help students express their wants, needs, feelings, and choices. The spinning chair, crash pad, body sock, fidget board, and busy board will provide movement, tactile input, and deep pressure to support self-regulation. A sensory tent will provide a calming, low-stimulation space when students feel overwhelmed. The light-up sand table and sensory bin will encourage hands-on exploration, fine-motor development, attention, and play.

Visual timers will make transitions and expectations more predictable, while safety mirrors will support body awareness, imitation, and social-emotional learning. Additional materials will help us create durable visual schedules, choice boards, and First/Then supports.

Together, these resources will help my students communicate more independently, regulate their bodies, and be ready to learn.
