Our students are proof that creativity is birthed from necessity. My students come to class daily with the goal in mind to reach their highest creative potential by finding solutions in their art making. Despite challenges in their personal lives, being under resourced, and being overlooked in many instances their enthusiasm is contagious.
My diverse body of students come to school daily seeking opportunities to break the cycle of poverty in their families by becoming successful and self-sufficient.Our school serves a low income population.
99% of our student population come from low income households. I feel that that the balance between students developing personally and academically comes with a strong art program. Art creates opportunities for them to materialize, explore different solutions, and develop a skill that will later be applicable and possibly lucrative in their lives.
My Project
My students have been forced to sit at old tables that are covered in years of scratches and paint. Where and how they sit is not conducive to them having the individual space they need to create their best works of art. With us returning to the building, this seating issue makes it impossible to social distance. When they return to the building, the art studio will have a whole new look. I want them to enter with enthusiasm and eagerness to create their greatest works without worry or anxiety of space or sickness by having their own drawing desks to sit at.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
