This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Having a central meeting place is a central component to any learning community. However, my students lack a comfortable place to come together to greet and appreciate each other, to have conversations, or to share a good book.

I teach fourth grade Spanish Literacy and Science to 40 brilliant young people at an urban neighborhood public school in California.

Eighty-five percent of them are from low-income families. Our school is a dual language immersion school, with the aim that all students will develop bilingual and bicultural literacy in English and Spanish. It is also an Expeditionary Learning School.

My Project

Normally, all classrooms at my school are furnished with a rug for Morning Meetings and other whole-class gatherings. This is a standard practice in most primary classrooms. However, I am a new teacher and unfortunately my district and school lacked the funds to purchase a rug for my students.

This is particularly important for my class since it is a Spanish immersion class; having conversations and oral fluency is the foundation to literacy in any language.

A classroom rug will give us a permanent and comfortable community space where my blossoming bilinguals can develop literacy and share their ideas. Your contribution will help my students develop fluency, confidence, and pride in two languages.
