Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a growing charter school with about 70% of the student body receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and multiple labels ODD, ADHD, ADD, OHI, ELL, and more. Their diversity isn't limited to just their backgrounds, but to the ways they learn best as well.

We are a fully inclusive elementary school that serves just over 500 students.

My students come to school eager to learn, whether or not they have support at home. They work hard to try to meet the high expectations of the teachers at the school. They thrive on new academic experiences and show the most growth with hands-on, real world activities.

My Project

These supplies will set aside an area in our classroom for us to devote time to science. Science should be a subject with movement, involvement, and activity...not a subject to be done in a desk. The large area rug will set off the space for us to do our science exploration. A huge unit of study for my third graders is biomes, and we especially delve into the aquatic biome and do lots of work with ocean animals. The book of origami, encyclopedia of animals, and growing models would be a wonderful setting for students to do self-paced independent study on what we read about during our reading centers.

I can already see the students doing exploratory projects in this sensory science zone!

It will be the place where students will complete experiments, design fidgets, see and handle models of the ocean animals we're studying, and even be given access to create their own origami animal models!
