Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a math specialist, I work with K-5 students who are below grade level in math. They have huge hearts and spirits and give it their all. They may come to school under difficult circumstances but remain resilient and look at the celebrations to be have beyond the tests.

Working in a dual language international school, many of my students navigate a cultural divide with amazing grace.

Most of my students are on free and reduced lunch while also striving towards being bi-literate global citizens. My students work together as a community trying to achieve and be the best they can be.

My Project

As a K-5 math interventionist, I typically work with students in a small group setting. Many of my students have experienced homelessness or some type of trauma. I have a small space to utilize and want to make it as comfortable as possible, as school may be where they feel most at home.

Giving the simple choice of a seat cushion or an alternative chair can help a student to be ready to learn - I have seen first hand how a frown can immediately turn into smile with flexible seating options.

I have borrowed flexible seating in the past and would love to have more consistent access for interventions. Many of the students I serve may be ADHD, on the spectrum, or simply have extra energy to burn. I need their undivided attention in order maximize learning during interventions and want to honor their needs.

Further, I have seen Boogie Boards used in place of whiteboards and would like to also try this out with some of my students because much of my instruction is interactive with whiteboard board so they are not afraid to make mistakes. They run through whiteboards and dry erase markers like no other! This will be an exciting and motivating tool to encourage a growth mind-set.

I will also be working before school to provide interventions twice a week. Providing a small snack has increased motivation and energy levels during this time to help meet their learning needs. We must meet basic needs before academic learning can occur.

This project will be a tremendous opportunity to help meet the academic and basic needs for all my students. Thank you for considering!
