I am the librarian/library teacher at PS 251 in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. Our school is a Title 1 school with over 80% of the population receiving free lunch.
My library space is wonderful. We have tables and chairs, some working computers, and a small separate "reading room" where children can have some quiet time, if they wish.
I also have a rug for group meetings and read alouds. Problem is, the rug is old, smelly, and too small for the classes that I teach. Plus, it has no borders, and that makes it very hard for the children to keep to themselves.
What I am hoping for is a new bright and colorful rug with actual bordered spaces for each child. I feel that the children (especially the younger ones) will benefit from the ownership of their own sitting area and that will automatically make their library experience more comfortable and full of enrichment.
The cost of this rug is great but I truly believe that children thrive on having a "spot to call their own." Please help me make this a reality so that my students can feel welcome and comfortable during their library sessions.
