Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way" (Frank Smith). As teachers, we won't open doors for our students. Children at our school learn in two languages because our families understand how beneficial it is to be bilingual in our nation and our world. By the end of our program, students have learned to read, write, and speak in both Spanish and English.

“Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things but learning another way to think about things” (Flora Lewis).

Students in our ever-changing, dynamic world need to be flexible thinkers who can adapt to change and understand varying points of view. Bilingualism gives students access to another language, but being bilingual also supports students in understanding perspectives different from their own.

At our school, we encourage creative thinking, risk-taking, caring and compassion for others, and a passion for social justice in our staff and our students. We want to provide the foundation for our students to become life-long problem solvers who use their bilingualism to advocate for justice and equity in our world.

My Project

Students learn best when they can touch, feel, and explore objects for themselves. These geometric foam shapes will allow students to have their own set of three-dimensional shapes to support learning in geometry.

Help me "shape up" my geometry lessons.

Students learn and remember so much more when they are part of the action. Currently, I have a large set of three-dimensional shapes for me to teach concepts about geometric solids, but students would learn so much more if they each had their own set to use during lessons. With these sets of geometric foam shapes, they'll be able to manipulate each three-dimensional shape for themselves, sliding, stacking, and rolling shapes to explore the attributes of each one.
