My Students
I work at a Title I school in Virginia that is predominately African American. Every child receives free breakfast and lunch. The challenges that some of the students face at home are unimaginable for adults to comprehend. Every year, at least half of the students have experienced some type of trauma during the course of their lives. However, they are very courageous young people who persevere through the many challenges and traumas that they have experienced in their lives.
Despite all of the negativity that may be in their lives, they continue to come to school every day and learn.
They are eager to learn and enthusiastic about the possibilities of the school year.
The possibilities for my students are endless. It is my job to get them closer to their dreams and aspirations. They are truly amazing young people with bright futures.
My Project
Everyday I have a student in the building ask me for a snack. Some have lunch too early and others have lunch too late. It’s difficult to focus on learning if you are hungry. When students ask, I want to be able to provide them with choices.
Meeting students needs goes beyond just academics.
The first in Maslow Hierarchy of Needs is physiological and that includes food. Some of the students who ask me about snacks are not in my classroom. I want to give snacks to whoever ask whenever they ask.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
