This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In English class, students spend a majority of the time reading and writing. My big classes are at the beginning and end of the day, students either come in hungry because they missed the morning breakfast, or they are brain foggy because it's toward the end of the day. They are bright, creative, and full of potential. They deserve to have access to nourishment, especially if they don't have access at home. Having a snack when you're working on your comprehension skills requires mental focus and you need energy to stay engaged.
Having snacks available helps students feel cared for, and builds a sense of safety and trust in the classroom.
Eating while reading also helps develop associations that help with memory recall much later, overcome fatigue, and keep the brain active.
Additionally, having snacks on hand helps my students stay in the classroom, so they don't leave for a long periods of time to obtain that from another source. Comfort is key and should be nurtured, especially if it keeps students in the classroom and helps them stay focused on their learning.
