A Smooth Way to Improve Healthy Eating

My students need 3 industrial sized blenders to mix fresh fruit in their Health & Fitness class.

My Students

Are you familiar with our rising childhood obesity rates across the country? Lack of exercise and too many added sugars have led to a 17% childhood obesity rate. This project will change eating habits by showing our students the incredible value and taste of drinking fresh fruit smoothies!

We are an urban school located in the Pacific Northwest.

Our student population is quite diverse with a variety of academic, physical and emotional needs. I am lucky to work with all 400 students in Kindergarten-5th grades. These kids value their time in Health & Fitness class, and they demonstrate strong content knowledge in nutrition-related lessons. Unfortunately, my daily visits to the lunchroom clearly show a disconnect between learned information and daily eating habits. Many of our students are throwing away their fresh fruits and vegetables in favor of more artificially sweetened foods. Each day our compost bin is full of apples or oranges or carrots that have hardly been touched. My repeated efforts to share the nutritional value of these foods in class and at lunchtime have failed to make much of a difference. I am certain that our students would change these habits if they were able to use their own fruits and vegetables to make tasty smoothies.

My Project

This project will give our students the opportunity to consume fresh fruits and vegetables in a whole new way. Many of our students have no idea that they can make a tasty treat by blending spinach with pineapple and banana, all without any added sugars! Best of all, these blenders will be used for all students during Health & Fitness class, at lunchtime and during after school clubs in the gym. Further, my school PTA has already committed to helping with some of the costs of purchasing fruits and vegetables from local markets. Students will learn how to create their own custom smoothie. They will then create menus, complete with the name of the drink, ingredients, calories per serving and other nutritional information. Students will share these recipes with family and friends.

This project will have a deep impact on our students.

It will ensure that our students are meeting their daily servings of fruits and vegetables, and it will encourage healthier eating habits at home. In short, this is our version of the "Jamie Oliver Food Experiment", and I believe that this will have far reaching implications. This project will quickly serve as a model to other schools who will follow by serving fresh fruit and vegetables to their students in a fun and unique way.
