My students need a tarp to allow their piñatas to dry in the classroom. Markers and easel paper will allow them to think through the real size dimensions of their piñatas.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students of our school are truly inspiring. Despite all hardships they face by being underprivileged, underserved in their school systems, and whatever other obstacles life may throw at them, they always survive.

If I had to pick 3 words to describe my students, they would be resilient, determined, and spirited.

Resilient, because even in the face of disasters such as Hurricane Harvey, they returned to school more focused and more eager to learn than ever. My students are determined because they don’t see their circumstances as hindering, they see them as fuel to transform into an informed citizen. Finally, my students are spirited because no matter how horrible my day is, they can always paint a smile on my face. They have taught me more than I could ever teach them about character, global awareness, and love.

My Project

All funds for this project will go directly to materials needed for students to create their own piñatas in Spanish class. After our 8th grade year, most students do not have an opportunity to take an art class in their high school careers. My mission is to bring art and creativity into an academic setting. After the AP exam, I like to give students a creative outlet after being so focused for so long, and for studying so much. In addition, it is a perfect way to retroactively celebrate Cinco de Mayo!

What better way to celebrate Hispanic/Latina culture than by creating your very own piñata?

Students will understand the hard work and creativity that go into creating lasting, traditional products. In addition they will also be able to express themselves creatively by making a piñata that represents who they are as a person!
