Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am lucky to work in a Title I school, full of diversity. Of my 23 current students, 17 of them are English Language learners, and more than half are girls. Many of them only speak Spanish at home, yet don't skip a beat when they come to school where English is the primary language. Some students struggle with financial difficulties and even homelessness. Despite this, my students are, in short, amazing.

I admire their tenacity and resilience.

My goal with this project is to provide a space where students can express themselves, try out new interests, and take pride in their work. I want to create a space and environment to explore STEM and STEAM activities at their own pace and develop their own interests. This space will include activities based on 21st-century skills such as coding and graphic design. I am so excited to give these kids an outlet and exposure to something that will create a love of learning and exploration. This project is a new project to supplement the recent projects that were funded. I want to keep the Makerspace full of supplies and choices for all my students.

In addition to the Makerspace, my goal this year is to bring in more science-related texts that are interesting and appealing to students (to supplement the school curriculum). We currently receive Scholastic News magazines and use them to supplement ELA and boy do the kids love that resource. This project includes some of the science resources that Scholastic offers and I cannot wait to get these into my students' hands.
