Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Dr. Seuss once said, "You have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes, you can steer yourself in any direction you choose." Our students are creative thinkers and diligent workers, but require extra motivation to remain on track.
Our students are classified as Emotionally Disturbed, Learning Disabled, and/or Autistic.
Many of them are economically disadvantaged and are not exposed to, or provided with much opportunity to explore their community and purchase items they need to support their interests. A typical day requires engaging students academically, socially, and emotionally by forming deep relationships with them on a personal and professional level. Our students have low motivation and struggle with managing their emotions and behaviors, which significantly interfere with their academic ability and progress. Students respond well to verbal praise and positive reinforcement; however, they require highly motivating, engaging rewards to be respectful, responsible, and safe throughout the school day. The ultimate goal is for students to obtain intrinsic motivation to follow directions and complete work; however, they currently require tangible items, which will eventually be faded out to promote independence
My Project
Assemblies are a crucial part of our program. The assemblies are used to highlight students' academic and social-emotional progress. Prior to assemblies, students receive "RRS" cards (Responsible, Respectful, Safe) when they have demonstrated appropriate behaviors. The higher number of cards received, the greater the likelihood that students will be selected as a winner. These cards are used for a raffle to receive prizes of interest. This method only works if we have prizes that the students are genuinely interested in and would 'work for.' Playing basketball helps relieve a significant amount of anxiety and stress, which enhances problematic behaviors. Basketball is not only a motivator for positive behavior, but is also an outlet to release social and emotional distress. Minecraft/Lego's is also a number one favorite for students who are not athletically inclined. It is believed that these items will increase positive behaviors and academic achievement.
Donations will significantly enhance students' desire to participate in classroom discussions, remain on task, and be respectful to peers and adults.
Students require tangible items, such as basketballs, basketball hoops, Lego's, and Minecraft books to acknowledge their accomplishments. Positive behavior will increase when students have something desirable to work towards, that they could not get anywhere else. The overall goal is to improve behavior to maximize academic achievement.
