A Sight for Sore Eyes: Books During Distance Learning
Help me give my students actual books to read! With students staring at screens all day, an engaging novel is a sight for sore eyes.

My Students
My students are curious, bright kids who attend an inner city San Francisco school. Many of my students are first or second generation immigrants who came here to escape violence, political strife, or extreme poverty in their home countries. Eighty percent of my students are English language learners, and about the same percentage come from families that fall below the poverty line.
Difficult life stories and poverty do not define my students, tough; their resilience is what defines them.
They come to class eager to learn and prove themselves. Given resources and opportunity, they can achieve anything.
My Project
During distance learning, our students are limited to a selection of free online books through the public library. In order to continue reading, they must continue staring at a screen after being online for class all day. This is no way to learn!
But you can help students escape into a fantasy world set in ancient China, accompanied by dragons and a brave young herione, all on the pages of books printed on actual paper.
Aligned with history standards (ancient civilizations) taught in 6th grade, this novel will also enable students to study plot and character development. And the best thing about this novel is that every year, children love it. As one student (a below grade level, reluctant reader) put it last year: "It's like a Netflix series in a book!" Your donation could actually convert a reluctant reader!
