My students need a shelf to store all of our reading and writing resources!
My kindergarten students are just entering the first year of their long academic career. Providing them with the necessary resources to ease their transition into school is key. I want to allow them to learn the way they learn best: through movement, hands-on play, art, exploration, and self-discovery.
My class is composed of a diverse set of learners with a variety of strengths and weaknesses; however, my students all have one thing in common: the desire to explore new concepts deeply, so they can best understand the world around them.
My class needs a shelf to store all of the reading games, puzzles, toys, and tools we use throughout the year. After our whole-group readalouds each day, students are given time to self-direct their learning while others are attending small group reading lessons. They choose which literacy skill they want to focus on. Students work with letter tiles to help learn sounds, build sight words, they play games that boost their word recognition and increase literacy skills and they create their own books just like their favorite authors! One thing is consistent, each skill requires a lot of tools that can be tricky to manage.
Currently they are stored in drawers, which gets messy - having a shelf will allow them to organize these resources and find the ones they want to work with easily and independently!
This shelf will allow them to see all of the choices that are available to them. Sometimes when resources are out of sight, they fall out of mind! Being able to see them easily will allow them to continue to utilize all of the resources. It will also make cleanup easier each day. My Kindergarten students do a great job of cleaning up, but occasionally we find pieces of games on the floor. Having them in shelves will allow them to put each piece where it goes - rather than just dropping it inside the drawer that is the closest. This shelf will provide my Kindergarten students with more independence, which is one of the most important skills they need to learn!
