This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Close your eyes, follow your breath.", "We are becoming smarter!", and "You don't know YET!"-phrases that you'll hear everyday in my classroom.
Despite the many challenges some of my students face, they are eager to engage in deep learning, & self-discovery.
My students come from diverse cultural backgrounds, including some with limited English proficiency and others who have had social/emotional trauma-but all are a valued member of our loving, learning community.
Our school sits in a neighborhood that is mostly comprised of Latino, African-American, & Caribbean-American working families. 84% of our total student population is considered low-income, and many of our students live in single-parent homes.
My Project
Having a rug in our classroom will provide our scholars with the space to sit together for mini-lessons, read alouds, small-group and/or independent work. Right now, we don't all fit on the rug if we want to sit in a circle.
Sitting in a circle promotes our sense of community-especially when we are sharing our thoughts on important topics or anchoring our day with our daily morning meetings.
The easel will be placed near the rug area since it is a tool for supporting instruction as well. The easel is used to demonstrate math concepts, as a place to show our literacy anchor charts, and for a myriad of lessons!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
