Hi! I am the Literacy Facilitator at Villa Heights Elementary School. I support each teacher's literacy block by going into their rooms and working with students in small groups to improve reading skills. My school has two magnet programs: Learning Immersion in K-5, and Gifted in 3-5. We have a very diverse population, and student ability levels range from well below average to well above average in every grade.
This year, my first grade team and I have set as one of our primary goals to work on enhancing the fluency rates in all of our students. We believe that the books in the "We Both Read" series are ideal tools for this purpose. Children need good role models who demonstrate fluent reading in order to become fluent readers themselves, and these books help to provide exactly that. "We Both Read" books are special in that they are designed to be read with an adult. The pages are structured so that the teacher reads one side and the student reads the other. The left-hand pages have advanced text, while the right-hand pages have grade appropriate text. Children will become fluent readers because they will be exposed to fluent reading each time their teacher reads one of these books with them.
Educators strive to provide the best education possible for all levels of learners. By incorporating this series into our literacy instruction, we will be giving our first grade students the opportunity to build fluency while spending quality time with a teacher as well as with their parent(s).
